What are requirements to complete Driver's Education?
To enroll in a Driver's Education class you must be at least 14 1/2 years of age. Each student will complete 36 hours: 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of behind the wheel training with one of our specialists. During COVID-19, classes are conducted virtually on Zoom until in-person classes are able to resume. A student will not be given a certificate of completion from Above Average Driving School until the completion of 36 hours of Driver's Education and they receive a score of at least 80% on their Final Exam.
Vision Test
Before starting behind the wheel training, each student must have their eyes examined by the North Carolina DMV. During COVID-19, these will be done through pre-scheduled drive-thru sessions. Social distancing will be practiced at each of our sessions. More information will be sent regarding the drive-thru sessions after the enrollment of your student into one of our classes.
Do I have to come to an eye examination date or can I go directly to the DMV?
According to new rules from the NC DMV, you may only go directly to the DMV after not being able to attend a minimum of 2 of our scheduled eye examinations at our office. Only after missing 2 scheduled eye examination dates, may you go directly to the DMV. We have eye examinations regularly and will directly email you information regarding each eye examination.
What do I do after completing Driver's Education?
After the completion of Driver's Education, your child will be given a certificate of completion from Above Average Driving School. You must contact your student's school to receive a Driver's Eligibility Form from their school to confirm that they are passing their classes. When your student turns 15, they can be taken to the DMV by their parent or legal guardian to attempt to receive their Learner's Permit by passing the DMV's Exam.
What do I need to do to get my Driver's License if I'm over 18?
To get your Driver's License, you must be a resident of North Carolina and must have already obtained a Learner's Permit before any behind the wheel training can be done. Please visit our scheduling page to see what packages are available for training. We will not be giving certificates for adults during COVID-19.
